We live in a community renowned for its natural beauty, waterfront, friendly people, arts, history and festivals!  We invite all residents to discover our Central Vancouver Island communities of Ladysmith, Cassidy, Cedar, South Nanaimo, Saltair and Chemainus. Join us as we launch the third annual Hometown Tourist weekend. The event on June 15 and 16 offers locals an opportunity to discover some of the special attractions and shops and services in their own hometown.  Often we overlook the treasures that are in our community. This campaign serves to remind us of the wonders that are literally in our backyard. On June 15 and 16, grab your camera and get ready to play tourist in your hometown. Amazing things happen in a small town!

Listed below are the events that will be held this year, be sure to check back here regularly for updates!

 

2013 Participants & Events to date:

Ladysmith and Area Accommodation Association are hosting an open house tour will be Saturday June 15 from 12 – 4:30 pm. This is always a favorite part of Home Town Tourist Weekend. Make a plan to attend, pass it along! Enter the draw for a Grand Prize Staycation. No reservations required

Ladysmith & District Marine and Rescue Society Dinner and Casino Fund Raiser Night. Come out and support the LDMRS for all the amazing work they do on the water. They are raising fund to purchase a new Fast Rescue Craft. Plan to attend June 15 doors open at 5pm at the Aggie Hall 1110 1st Ave Ladysmith. Hazelwood Herb Farm will be participating again with free tours of the farm, tour times will be 11:00 and 1:00 on Saturday, June 15. Sealegs Kayaking Saturday, June 15 9:30am–6pm ‘Two for One’ Rent 1 single kayak for one hour at the regular price the 2nd single kayak rental is free. No Reservation Required

Adventure writer Jill Collins will be hosting a nature walk for families at  Stocking Creek Park – FREE Join in on a family nature walk on June 15 at 10:30 am with Jill Collins at Stocking Creek Park. The walk features, beautiful natural surroundings, interpretive signs, wide groomed trails as well as narrow dirt beaten paths and a plunging waterfall that will awaken your adventurous spirit.  There will be opportunities for young and old to play in the water, dress accordingly (sturdy sandals best). No Reservation Required

Park access on Thicke Rd off of Chemainus Road.  Watch for a small blue sign.  From parking lot walk down gravel path at will lead to picnic table. Walk will begin at 10:30am.

Things to bring:
Sturdy footwear, weather appropriate.  If sunny, sturdy sandals recommended for the ultimate adventure experience.

Small backpack
Light jacket or long sleeve shirt
Snacks and water
Lunch, mingle and chat with Jill and other families after the walk

Friends of Morden Mine, www.mordenmine.com, are pleased to support Hometown Tourist Weekend by offering free on demand tours of Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16.  Tours will provide information about Morden Colliery’s 100 year old history as well as about Friends of Morden Mine’s continuing endeavours to ensure that  Morden’s unique, still standing structures survive as monuments to early coal mining days and industrial innovation.
